Kraft packaging for coffee roasters and tea brands

These two categories look adjacent and behave completely differently. Coffee off-gasses and oxidises fast. Tea does neither. The packaging decision splits at that point.

Coffee needs a one-way degassing valve and a barrier matched to its roast-to-shelf window. Tea has a lower barrier requirement, which is why compostable kraft structures work well for tea and involve a real trade-off for coffee.

What actually drives the spec

The constraints that decide the structure in this category, in the order they matter.

Coffee off-gasses after roasting

Whole bean releases CO2 for days. A sealed pouch without a one-way valve will swell and can split. The valve is not optional on fresh roast.

Compostable costs coffee shelf life

Compostable structures give up oxygen barrier against a foil laminate. For a roaster shipping within two weeks that is fine. For retail distribution with a 12-month date it usually is not.

Tea is the easy case

Lower oxygen sensitivity means compostable kraft structures work without a meaningful shelf-life penalty. Tea is where the sustainability story costs you nothing.

Subscription and retail need different packs

A subscription bag ships in a mailer and never sits on a shelf. A retail bag needs a flat bottom, a hang hole or a euro slot, and a barcode panel.

Questions from this category

Do I need a degassing valve on tea?

No. Tea does not off-gas. Valves are a coffee requirement and add cost with no benefit on tea.

Can I use a compostable pouch for retail coffee?

You can, but be honest about the date code. Compostable structures give less oxygen barrier than foil, so a 12-month retail shelf life is difficult. We test against your roast profile rather than quoting a general number.
